Good Makery’s Bike Lady Blog post

Here is a blog post I wrote for Good Makery. I also made this cute image of her signature pig riding a bicycle:

THE JOYS OF GIVING BACK

October 17, 2016

We believe in the power of giving and want to show kids the joys of giving back.
Whenever a child makes a gift at Good Makery, we give them a symbolic coin that they can deposit into a piggy bank. We donate the contents of the piggy bank to a local charity. Right now we are happy to be donating to the Bike Lady

Bike Lady is a Columbus-based charity that strives to give bikes and helmets to children under the legal custody of the county or state, such as Franklin County Children Services.  Since 2008, they have given over 6,477 Ohio foster children a brand new bicycle, helmet and bike lock.

We first met the charity at the Grandview Hop. The girl pictured above was riding a bike through the crowd asking for donations in exchange for a chance to win this bike.
A bicycle is one of the most meaningful gifts a child can receive because it provides a sense of independence and allows them to visit friends, ride to the park or get to school.
The bike parts are shipped from Huffy directly to Department of Rehabilitation and Correction locations such as the Pickaway Correctional Institution in Orient where the bikes are assembled. Without the work of the Bike Lady, many children might never experience the joy and freedom of a bicycle.

We are thrilled to be donating a portion of our profits to the great work the Bike Lady is doing in our community.  Make an appointment with us 614.563.7321.

City, sheriff to address opioid issue

Posted Jan 16, 2017

The City of Canal Winchester and the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office will team to host a Community Education event on Jan. 25 at the Frances Steube Community Center at 22 S. Trine St. in Canal Winchester.

By DEBBIE GILLUM, THISWEEKNEWS.COM

The City of Canal Winchester and the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office will team to host a Community Education event on Jan. 25 at the Frances Steube Community Center at 22 S. Trine St. in Canal Winchester.
The free program will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and will cover topics such as the opioid epidemic, prescription drug abuse, community awareness and identifying illegal drug activity.
The public is invited to join Mayor Mike Ebert, Sheriff Dave Phalen and Commander Dennis Lowe of the Fairfield-Hocking-Athens Major Crime Unit for this discussion geared to help maintain a safe and secure community.
Lowe and Phalen will make a presentation. Also planned is time for questions and the chance for community members to start a dialogue.
Sheriff Phalen said the presentation will help educate citizens as to what certain drugs look like, what the trends have been, learn how drugs are brought into communities, what parents can do and what the warning signs look for if drugs are in a neighborhood.
“This isn’t a new issue; we’ve seen this kind of drug abuse for eight or nine years all throughout the state of Ohio,” Phalen said. “In this point in time, we’ve done a good job educating students in the schools and we have a lot more resources for treatment for someone who is addicted.”
Lowe said his main goal is to raise awareness and explain what law enforcement is doing to address the issue.
He acknowledged that Fairfield County “certainly does have drug issues” and that “drug addiction is a real problem in society.”
“I think it would be important for anyone in Canal Winchester or surrounding areas to attend, so they can get a sense of what public officials are doing to address the issue and what the public can do,” he said. “People need to remember that these police officers live in the community, too, and we need the public’s help with this. It’s important the public educate themselves.”
Lowe said Ohio has become an epicenter in the nation’s drug crisis and the state leads the nation in opioid overdose deaths.
Amanda Lemke, Canal Winchester’s Events & Communications coordinator, said the community hosted a similar event last year but focused on general drug abuse. This year, they chose to focus solely on the opioid epidemic for the first time, because “it is such a hot topic in the news right now.”
“In Ohio, we are seeing tremendous numbers of people affected and every community is being affected, including Canal Winchester,” she said. “It’s such a grave issue.”
Information also will be available to those interested in joining the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Community Watch program.
“A lot of people may think their own family can’t be affected but as we’ve seen recently, any family can be affected,” Lemke said. “The more you know, the more prepared you will be.”

Good Makery: Kid-Friendly Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt Idea

I wrote this blog post for Good Makery back in November and am a few months late in sharing it to my website. Better late than never! The post was emailed and posted on Good Makery’s website.

Thanksgiving Prep: How To Involve Your Kids

When family comes over this Thanksgiving, invite the kids to go on a fun outdoor scavenger hunt and create a centerpiece with what they find.

Customize the list below to fit your neighborhood or local park and challenge older kids to find more specific items like “a red leaf that’s bigger than your hand.”

After the scavenger hunt, gather up all the items and incorporate them into your Thanksgiving centerpiece. Then sit back, and be thankful for the pride they feel from their contribution.

My two seconds of fame

Who’s that chick at 0:40? Damn.
I was part of a video for Fechtor Advertising and Mills James created for Donatos.  It was a fun experience filming in the Short North, near the Greystone Apartments, and I was happy to help.
(I don’t agree with the sign I’m holding. I was the only one who volunteered to hold that particular sign.)

Little Shop of Horrors

Little Shop of Horrors is one of my favorite musicals. It was one of the first musicals I was exposed to as a kid and I just wore out the soundtrack, listening to it over and over.
Now, I have most of the songs memorized and even the movie dialogue committed to memory.
I’ve lived in Columbus for so long and never been to Shadowbox Live. So, when I saw Little Shop of Horrors was coming to Shadowbox Live, I was stoked.
My positive experience with Shadowbox Live started before I even arrived. I needed to exchange tickets that I’d bought online for the 2pm show to the 7pm show. I went out of town Saturday and worried I wouldn’t be back in time on Sunday for the 2pm show.
When I called Shadowbox, it was a painless process to get the tickets exchanged. I was worried this exchange wouldn’t even be possible but it was not big deal. What a relief.
When my mom and I arrived, the staff was very knowledgeable and professional in directing us to our seats. Our waiter was very friendly. It’s pretty unique how the waitstaff is part of the production. It was a bit weird to see them with all their stage makeup on and wait for our checks after the show was over.
This Little Shop of Horrors was the best production I’ve ever seen! The actors and actresses were so engrossed in their characters. Their facial expressions and movements were hilarious. For example, Audrey would stand in the doorway of the flower shop and make a dramatic face after saying an important line. They made it into a fun musical and didn’t take it too seriously, which is perfect.
You could tell they were having fun on stage and it just radiated off them.
The live band was phenomenal. They have found some of Columbus’ most talented musicians and performers.
I can totally see why The Dispatch gave the show such a favorable review.
I can’t wait to go back to Shadowbox again and I’d strongly recommend seeing a show there.

What’s on my Spotify

My current Spotify playlist is named Pumpkin Spice and Peppermint Lattes. Here’s my top tracks right now:

2 Heads by Coleman Hell

I first heard this song on a Spotify Discover Weekly playlist and thought yea, that’s cool. But then I heard it on 105.7 The X and got it stuck in my head. That same day, I went for a drive down to Hillsboro, Ohio and proceeded to listen to that song, oh, 6 times during that car ride.

The lyrics resonate with me right now in my life and I love the banjo part after the verses. The lyrics seem to describe the singer’s desire to improve his relationship and to not let their fights consume them or make them into something they know they are not. Like he sings with such a raw desire. It’s beautiful how he realizes what they are turning into and begs that they don’t become that monster. Such simple but elegant lyrics.

“There must be something in the water/ And there must be something about your daughter/ She said our love ain’t nothing but a monster/ Our love ain’t nothing but a monster/ With 2 heads”

“I hope to God I’ll love you longer/ If only I could live forever/ If only I could hold you longer”

Sweater Weather by Taylor Phelan, originally by The Neighbourhood

I heard this song also on a “we think you’d like this” Spotify playlist and recognized the lyrics of course. I like this version a lot because it’s slower and he articulates the lyrics more than The Neighbourhood. I recommend signing along to this version in your car when stuck in traffic.  I don’t know who Taylor Phelan is because I don’t watch much of The Voice, but I can appreciate a good

Wonderful by Everclear

Remember this song? Yeah. I was listening to the radio and something reminded me of this song and I re-fell in love with it. It’s so 2004. What a perfect song when you just want to admit that you had a bad day and things aren’t always perfect.

Tinder by Motel Raphael

I’m not a hipster but liking this song helps me pretend I am. They don’t seem to be a well-known band yet but are still making cool music. I admit the title of this song caught my attention before the actual music did. But I do think it’s well produced. It has a young Taylor Swift vibe to it. I like when she sings “But I’m only lonely when I’m drunk.”

Individual Baked Eggs recipe

Bacon wrapped eggs
I had some time in the morning, so I cooked myself a breakfast of Individual Baked Eggs.
I used a recipe from the AllRecipes magazine but it can also be found online.
It was pretty simple to make but next time I make them, I won’t add the bacon grease to the muffin pan. It was greasy enough.
Recipe I used

Ingredients:

  • 6 strips of bacon
  • 6 eggs
  • Cheddar Cheese

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
  2. Cook bacon
  3. Wrap bacon slice around the inside of a muffin cup.
  4. Place a little bacon grease in the bottom of muffin cup.
  5. Drop in egg.
  6. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes.
  7. Place a little cheddar cheese over egg after about 10-12 minutes
  8. Continue cooking until cheese is melted and egg is cooked.

Wrap bacon around muffin tin and add an egg inside
I cooked my bacon in the oven at 350 for 12 minutes
Eggs inside the bacon circles
Almost done cooking
Cook at 350, adding some cheese after about 12 minutes

I used shredded cheese from Trader Joes

Good Makery’s One Last Memory Before School Email

I’ve been helping Good Makery  with their digital marketing and back in August I wrote this blog post and designed in MailChimp this cute email that went out to all of the email subscribers. I’m proud of the playful image, on-brand color scheme, and the educational content of the blog. Before writing this, I didn’t know what a Schultüte was but it’s actually a really neat tradition.

Make one last memory before school!

How to relieve your child’s back to school jitters

In some European countries, parents give their child a Schultüte (pronounced shool-too-tuh) meaning “school cone” in German. It is filled with candy and school supplies and is meant to sooth the child’s nerves.

At Good Makery we model our packaging after this darling tradition.

You can make one last summer memory with your child by bringing them in to make a gift for themselves, such as a personalized “Good Luck Charm” for back to school or magnet to hang up their “A+” papers.

Pet Wellness Veterinary Clinic images

I help Pet Wellness Veterinary Clinic with their digital marketing and wanted to share these images I made for them:
Friday, we posted this on Facebook to let our followers know we don’t have any clinics this weekend. People seemed to like it more than just a sentence saying “No clinics this weekend.”

This is an infographic I made to help educate clients about what vaccinations their dog needs.

We are going to share this on Facebook to promote our next clinic.
