If you’ve driven the East Quad loop this past week, you’ve probably noticed the dented guard rail behind Crawford. A drunk driver ran his car into the rail last Saturday. The Denisonian briefly reported on the situation, but, now that the investigation has closed, we have more information.

On Nov. 10 at 1:43 a.m., Officer Zach Markley from the Granville Police Department was dispatched to meet Denison Security in regard to a car crash that had occurred. The vehicle was a gray Audi A6 with an Ohio license plate.

The driver’s vehicle came around the curve at Crawford, struck the curb and went up onto the guard rail. The driver was identified as 20 year old male Andrew Vance, who is a former Denison student. He “was driving erratically and way too fast for the area,” according to the Granville Police department’s crime report.

When Corporal Sandbrick from the Granville police approached the vehicle, Vance attempted to start the vehicle again, but due to the damage, was not able to. There was a noticeable odor coming from the driver, leading the Sandbrick to believe that he was intoxicated. There was no one else in the car with him when he crashed.

When Vance attempted to walk to the ambulance, Sandbrick noticed that the driver had bloodshot, glassy eyes and was having trouble standing on his own. The medics from the courtesy ambulance checked out the driver.

He was transported to Licking Memorial Hospital where a CT scan was performed. The police followed the driver to Licking Memorial Hospital to ask him more questions.

They noticed a “very strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his person and observed that he was holding a bucket with vomit inside of it,” according to the report. The officer read him his rights and informed him that his license was now under suspension and that he would be cited for OVI and failure to control, and that he would be cited for underage drinking.

A criminal summons was issued to Vance, and he was ordered to appear in Mayor’s Court on Nov. 15 at 8:30 a.m.
