Book Review: Home is Where the Bodies Are

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 stars

A captivating, easy-to-digest mystery thriller where three siblings in a small town uncover the cold, dark truth about their family.

I read this book as part of my friend’s book club. Recently, I haven’t been reading the book club books but this one caught my attention when I read the summary. And, I was able to borrow the audiobook from the library in time.

I found this book very satisfying. It captivated me right from the beginning. The book opens with beautiful, memorable, poetic prose about death and how it comes for us all.

The novel had strong character development, plot twists and turns and an ending that answered all the questions. I love a good neatly tied bow.

It’s told in first person from different perspectives each chapters, allowing the reader to better understand the siblings and even their deceased mother. I listened to this audiobook and liked that each chapter was a different narrator. This allowed me to distinguish the character’s voices. I’m not a mystery genre enthusiast but I think this format is common in mysteries. I’m reading another mystery novel (but, I don’t consider myself a mystery fan) that uses the same multiple narrator structure.

I felt like this book captured family relations better than any book. The way the estranged siblings talked to one another felt realistic and familiar even though I haven’t personally experienced that. I liked how at the novel’s core it examines what does a parent’s love look like, at what cost would they protect their child.

I definitely didn’t see the ending coming but hardly ever do. Other book club members said they noticed the early clues and weren’t as surprised by the ending.

I feel like this is one of those rare books that’s well-marketed. It’s got a unique book cover (a black VHS tape) and an enticing book jacket summary that accurately reflects the book inside. A book club member said they released special versions of this book with a VHS sleeve for the book. The cover of this book helps it stand out in the bookstore.

I thought the story was well told and would recommend this book to anyone looking for a satisfying 2024 mystery thriller.
